John Ed Warring

Sedan –

John Ed Warring, age 76, of Sedan, Kansas passed away Wednesday, October 31, 2007 at his residence in Sedan, Kansas.

John was born August 17, 1931 in Sedan, Kansas to Cleo J. “Dutch” and Nell (Anderson) Warring. He was born and raised in Sedan and graduated from Sedan High School in 1949. He served in the United States Navy from March 20, 1951 to March 11, 1955. He attended Emporia State University for two years. He married Shirley Jones on November 21, 1956 in Independence, Kansas. She preceded him in death on May 2, 1989.

He worked in construction and as a truck driver for the Sedan Limestone Company, retiring in 1987. He also enjoyed working at the Emmett Kelly Museum in Sedan for the past ten years.

He was a lifetime resident of Sedan and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sedan and the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. He enjoyed jazz music.

He is survived by two sons, John Russell Warring and his wife Cristine of Hutchinson, Kansas and James D. “Jim” Warring of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; one sister, Shirley Boulanger of Sedan, Kansas; five grandchildren and a very close friend, Sharon Buhler of Sedan, Kansas;

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Shirley.

Friends may sign the register book on Friday, November 2, 2007, from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan. The casket will be closed.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, November 3, 2007, at the First Baptist Church in Sedan with Reverend J. Dean McNamara and Reverend John R. Warring officiating. Interment will follow at the Greenwood Cemetery in Sedan.

In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested memorial contributions to the Sedan High School Music Department and these remembrances may be left in care of David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 209 N. Douglas, Sedan, Kansas 67361.

Elmer L. Oestman

Coffeyville –

Elmer L. Oestman, 68, of rural Coffeyville, passed away Saturday (October 27, 2007) at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center.

He was born March 30, 1939, at Grainola, OK, to Richard and Ella (Wolff) Oestman. He grew up in the Chelsea, OK area where he attended school, graduating from Chelsea High School in 1958.

Elmer moved to the Coffeyville area in 1965 when he began working at Acme Foundry, where he was employed as a core maker until retiring in 1998.

On June 29, 1986 he married Karen Sevier at Coffeyville. Following their marriage they continued making their home in the Coffeyville area.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Coffeyville, and was a member of Promenade Square Dance Club.

Survivors include his wife, Karen of the home; one step daughter, Wynona Brewster of Independence; two step sons, Troy Frazier and Tony Frazier both of Coffeyville; one brother, Vernon (Elva) Oestman of South Coffeyville, OK; one sister Leola (Lawrence) Rippe of Newkirk, OK; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 31, 2007) at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Jane Brigham-Graham officiating. Burial will be in Robbins Cemetery west of Coffeyville.

Friends may call on Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville. The family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

The family suggests memorials to the Promenade Square Dance Club; contributions may be left with funeral home.

Mina Augusta Caswell

Sedan –

Mina Augusta Caswell, age 87, of Peru, Kansas passed away early Tuesday morning, October 23, 2007 at the Coffeyville Regional Medical Center in Coffeyville, Kansas.

She was born August 30, 1920 in Nowata County, Oklahoma to Thomas M. and Mary D. (Moore) Long. She grew up and attended school there until the 7th grade. She married Kenneth W. Caswell on October 27, 1939 at the Methodist Parsonage in Tyro, Kansas. They lived in Wann, Oklahoma for two years, later moving to Neodesha, Kansas and living there for six years. After moving to Tyro, Kansas and living there for eight years, they moved to Peru in 1985. Her husband Kenneth preceded her in death on November 12, 2000.

She was a housewife and was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Caney.

She is survived by three sons, Leon Caswell of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Bill Caswell of St. Paul, Kansas and Ben Caswell of Peru, Kansas; two daughters, Claudia Dhooge of Greeley, Colorado and Laura Lumley of Peru, Kansas; one sister, Lahoma Deiley of Picher, Oklahoma; thirteen grandchildren and thirty-six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Kenneth and sixteen brothers and sisters.

Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Thursday, October 25, 2007 at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan, Kansas.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, October 26, 2007 at the First Christian Church of Sedan with Leon Caswell officiating. Interment will follow at the Robbins Cemetery west of Coffeyville, Kansas.

Margaret Smith

Coffeyville –

Margaret E. Smith, 86, of Dearing passed away Monday (October 22, 2007) at the Continuous Care Center in Bartlesville, OK.

She was born December, 23, 1920 in Coffeyville to Charley Leroy and Martha Ellen (Rehms) Smith. She grew up and received her education in Coffeyville graduating from Field Kindley High School.

On September 2, 1939 she married William Chester “Chet” Smith at Sedan. Following their marriage they made their home in Coffeyville and Dearing before moving to Seattle, WA where they lived for 10 years while Mr. Smith was employed by Boeing Aircraft Co. They later moved to Wichita where Mr. Smith continued employment with Boeing and Mrs. Smith was employed at Blair’s IGA Store. Following Mr. Smith’s retirement in 1972 they returned to Dearing where they owned and operated Smith Grocery Store until retiring in 1979 after selling the store. Mr. Smith preceded her in death on August 13, 2001.

Mrs. Smith was a member of the Dearing Christian Church.

Survivors include two sons, Chester Smith of Winfield, and Larry Smith of Coffeyville; one daughter, Linda Mersberg of Dearing; one brother, Clement Smith of Derby, one half sister Betty Morgan of Broken Arrow, OK; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Richard Smith; one daughter Sheri Robbins; one brother; one sister; and one grandson.

Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday (October 26, 2007) at the Dearing Christian Church with Reverend Jamie Regis officiating. Burial will be in Robbins Cemetery west of Coffeyville.

Friends may call on Wednesday from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Dee Messer

Coffeyville –

Dee Messer, 64, of Coffeyville, passed away Thursday (October 18, 2007) at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center.

He was born June 10, 1943 at Joplin, Missouri to Dee L. and Florence (Weiser) Messer. He grew up in Joplin where he attended Miriam School and graduated from Joplin High School in 1961. Following high school he attended Joplin Vo-Tech.

On April 11, 1964, he married Donna Gibson at Joplin, MO. Following their marriage they made their home in the Joplin area where he worked in numerous management positions and as district manager for Sav-A-Stop Inc. of Birmingham, AL. Later he managed Buyer’s United Grocery Store in Joplin. In 1973, they moved to Independence, KS to open and manage the Main Dollar Store. In 1974 he began working for Farmland Industries in Coffeyville where he was employed until 2004. He was the Business Manager for International Union of Operating Engineers Local 123 in Coffeyville.

He was a member of Keystone Masonic Lodge #102 A.F. & A.M. in Coffeyville, Mirza Shrine in Pittsburg, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1022 Men’s Auxiliary. Dee was an avid golfer and bowlers and belonged to Coffeyville Country Club. He also was a member of the Local Workforce Investment Board in Chanute. Dee served on the Coffeyville City Commission and served as Mayor of Coffeyville.

Survivors include his wife, Donna of the home; one daughter and her husband, Melissa LaVon and Rolla Newt Adey of Independence; two granddaughters, Shea Elizabeth Casurole of Coffeyville, and Sydney Cheyenne Adey of Independence; his mother, Florence of Joplin, MO; two brothers, Jackie Messer of Fort Scott, KS, and Danny Messer of Independence, MO; four sisters, Nancy McManus of Olathe, KS, Christy Carter of Braunsfield, TX, Gloria Swindoll of Fort Collins, CO, and Roseanne Messer of Leavenworth, KS; one uncle Norman Messer of Carl Junction, MO; and numerous other family members and friends.

A Memorial Service will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday (October 25, 2007) in the Westside Christian Church with Reverend Mike Elrod officiating. Cremation will take place.

Friends may sign the register book on Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville.

Randy S. Diveley

Coffeyville –

Randy S. Diveley, 55, of rural Coffeyville passed away Tuesday (October 16, 2007) at his home.

He was born December 28, 1951, in Coffeyville to Richard “Dick” and Leita (Decow) Diveley. Randy grew up and attended school in Coffeyville, graduating from Field Kindley High School in 1970, and Coffeyville Community College, before attending and graduating from Emporia State University with degrees in Business and Fine Art.

On October 8, 1977 he married Nancy Barnard at Independence, KS. Following their marriage they made their home in the Coffeyville area where Randy was employed for 23 years in the Maintenance Department at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center.

He was a member of Tyro Christian Church where he was a Teacher for the 2 and 3 year olds. He also watched Praise Band members children during practices. Randy filled in for his father at Red Raven football games shooting the shotgun after each Ravens score many times and along with his son Landon began shooting the shotguns the last two seasons at the Red Ravens games.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy of the home; two sons, Landon and Jenny Diveley of Independence, and Logan and Sara Diveley of Bartlesville, OK; two daughters, Laecen and Josh Seese of Lima, Ohio; and Laurin Diveley of Pittsburg, KS; his mother, Leita Diveley of Coffeyville, one brother, Kent and Kim Diveley of Ponca City, OK; and one grandson, Trenton Diveley of Independence. He was preceded in death by his father.

A Memorial Service will be at 11:00 a.m., Friday (October 19, 2007) in the Tyro Christian Church in Tyro, with David Bycroft officiating. Inurnment will follow at Robbins Cemetery west of Coffeyville.

Friends may call to sign the guest book on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Richard Whitson, Sr.

Sedan –

Richard Del Whitson, Sr., age 65, of Cedar Vale, Kansas passed away Tuesday, October 16, 2007 at his residence in Cedar Vale, Kansas.

He was born January 29, 1942 in Cherryvale, Kansas to Orville and Myrtle (Kross) Whitson. He grew up and attended school in Cherryvale. He married Fern Mae Burnhart and they later divorced.

He was a truck driver for Austin Trucking for twenty-five years, retiring in 2005.
He moved from Fredonia to Cedar Vale in 2005 after retirement.

He is survived by three sons, Steve Whitson and his wife Glenna of Caney, Kansas, Lance Whitson of Ft. Collins, Colorado and Richard Del Whitson, Jr. of Independence, Kansas; one daughter, Katrina Evans of Ft. Collins, Colorado; one stepdaughter, Rhonda of Lawrence, Kansas; twelve grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.

Cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time.

Irene Venters

Sedan –

Irene Venters, age 93, of Sedan, formerly of Cedar Vale, Kansas passed away Tuesday, October 16, 2007 at the Pleasant Valley Manor Nursing Home in Sedan.

She was born October 11, 1914 in Maple City, Kansas to Edward and Ida May (Sullivan) Gassett. She grew up and attended school in Cedar Vale. She married Edward Venters in April of 1935 in Newkirk, Oklahoma. He preceded her in death on May 23, 1964.

She lived in the Cedar Vale area all of her life and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Cedar Vale Baptist Church and the Rebekah Lodge.

She is survived by two daughters, Sonya Boothe and her husband Richard of Clearwater, Kansas and Shirley Mills of Sedan, Kansas; one sister, Nadine Ralston of Wichita, Kansas; seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edward; two sisters and one brother.

Cremation has taken place and friends are welcome to sign the register book from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Wednesday through Friday, October 17 through October 19, 2007 at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 20, 2007 at the Pleasant Valley Manor Nursing Home in Sedan with Earl Tresner officiating. Burial will be held at a later date.

Lucy Garrett Jackson

Sedan –

Lucy Garrett Jackson, age 85, died Sunday, October 7, 2007 in Abilene Texas.

Lucy was born in Hulbert, Oklahoma on October 18, 1921 to Paul and Katherine Hart Orton. She graduated from Chautauqua High School in Chautauqua, Kansas and Coffeyville Junior College in Coffeyville Kansas. Employment included five years as the Social Editor at the Sedan Times Star, thirty-three years with Southwestern Bell, starting as a switchboard operator and finishing as the manager of the Local Business Office, and four years with the oil company of Geologist Harry Pierce.

She was an active member of Epiphany Episcopal Church and belonged to the St. Agnus Guild, Altar Guild, and also the Naomi Guild which she helped establish. Community activities included Beta Sigma Phi, Eastern Star, Telephone Pioneers Sedan Chamber of Commerce, and The Tuesday Study Club.

She is survived by two daughters, Vicki Kuzma and husband Robert of Abilene, Texas, and Ginny Turvey and husband Robert of Lawrence Kansas; one brother, Allen Orton of Belle Plaine, Kansas; five grandchildren, Andy Kuzma, Sherry Oberholtzer, Paul, Michael and David Turvey and three great grandchildren, Madelyn and Savanna Oberholtzer and Nathan Turvey.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Katherine Orton, one brother James A. Orton, and husbands Harry L. “Bunny” Garrett and Harvey Jackson.

Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, November 9, 2007 at the Epiphany Episcopal Church in Sedan, Kansas, with the Reverend Barbara K. Bloxsom officiating. Inurnment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.

Michael Robinson

Sedan –

Michael Leland Robinson, age 56, of Sedan, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, October 2, 2007 at the Jane Phillips Medical Center in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.

He was born December 22, 1950 in San Diego, California to Thomas L. and Mabel M. (Cochran) Robinson. He attended Helix High School in La Mesa, California, graduating from there in 1969. He then attended and graduated from Grossmont Junior College.

He worked as a repair person in telecommunications in California.

He lived in San Diego, California and then Denver, Colorado before moving to Sedan in 2000.

He is survived by one son, Buck Raincrow Robinson of Oceanside, California; one daughter, Shenoa Robinson of San Diego, California; three brothers, Thomas Robinson of Tahlequah, Oklahoma, George Robinson of California and Billy Robinson of Tahlequah, Oklahoma; one sister, Mary Margaret “Maggie” Halowell of San Diego, California and one grandchild.

Cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time.
