Sedan –

Weltha Mae McGregor, age 90, of Sedan, Kansas passed away Friday morning, November 5, 2010 at the Sedan City Hospital in Sedan, Kansas.

She was born March 2, 1920 in Moore Prairie, west of Sedan, Kansas to William and Mabel (Post) Wendt. She attended and graduated from Sedan High School. She married Gerald W. Mills and he preceded her in death in 1958.  She later married Herman Roecker and he preceded her in death.  She later married John McGregor on September 7, 1991 in Wichita, Kansas. He preceded her in death on June 14, 2010.

She worked as an Office Manager for Union Gas for over twenty years until her retirement.

She was a life-long resident of Sedan, Kansas.  She was the oldest living member of the First Baptist Church and was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star.  She enjoyed her cats, crafts, games and her grandchildren.

She is survived by one daughter, Sandra Keller and her husband Doug of Independence, Missouri; one half sister, Lela Tyson of Wichita, Kansas; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her three husbands and one sister.

Family and friends may call from 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Monday, November 8, 2010 at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home of Sedan, Kansas.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at the First Baptist Church in Sedan, Kansas with Reverend Gene DeWitt and Pastor John Warring officiating. Interment will follow at the Greenwood Cemetery in Sedan.

The family has suggested memorial contributions to the Pleasant Valley Manor Nursing Home, the First Baptist Church of Sedan or the Chautauqua County Animal Shelter and these remembrances may be left in care of David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 209 N. Douglas, Sedan, Kansas 67361.

Sedan-

Clara Elaine Keeny, age 84, of Sedan, Kansas passed away Sunday, October 31, 2010 at Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan.

She was born July 10, 1926 in Sedan, Kansas to Dean and Grace (Morton) Webb.  She attended and graduated from Sedan High School.

On May 9, 1954 she married E. Marvin Keeny in Sedan, Kansas.  He preceded her in death on November 15, 1980.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.  She enjoyed working for the Cub Scout Pack #15 in Sedan for over fifty years, gardening, reading, western shows, singing, and collecting things.  She was a beloved housewife, mother and grandmother.

She is survived by one son, Christopher E. Keeny of Niotaze, Kansas; one brother Kenneth Webb of Sedan, Kansas; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one son, two daughters, one brother and one grandson.

Family and friends may call from 12:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., Monday, November 1, 2010 at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan, Kansas.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday, November 2, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the Greenwood Cemetery in Sedan with Pastor John Warring officiating.

Sedan –

Loren “Smitty” Smith, age 85, of Sedan, Kansas passed away Monday, September 6, 2010 at the Sedan City Hospital in Sedan, Kansas.

He was born in Sedan, Kansas to Leslie Ray and Thelma (McBrian) Smith on March 15, 1925.  He was a member of the American Legion, Sedan Round Up Club, the Blue Devil Booster Club and the National Horseshoe Pitcher’s Association.  He was also a member of the Sedan Volunteer Fire Department for approximately twenty-one years.

He attended Magga Kilmer grade school and Sedan High School, graduating in 1944.  In 1943, he started working for the Missouri-Pacific Railroad, working there until he enlisted in the United States Air Force in October of 1947.  He served his country for four years until he was honorably discharged in 1951.

He married Hazel Irene Rathburn on September 23, 1950. They lived in Johnston, Ohio.  She preceded him in death in August of 1969.

He returned to Sedan, Kansas in 1973.  In 1981, he started as Custodian of the Vocational Building of the Sedan High School, a position he held until his retirement in 1996.  He enjoyed pitching horseshoes, repairing bicycles and woodworking, just to name a few.

He is survived by his son, Donald Smith of Satanta, Kansas; his daughter and son-in-law, Ronald and Cindy Myers of Sedan, Kansas; four granddaughters, Brianna Shobe and husband Travis of Grove, Oklahoma, Audrey Fisher and husband Sean of South Coffeyville, Oklahoma, Tasha Smith of South Coffeyville, Oklahoma and Kandice Smith of Topeka, Kansas; three great-granddaughters; one sister, Myda Sallee of Winfield, Kansas and numerous “adopted” grandsons and granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Hazel; one daughter; one son, Lyle; one brother, Frankie and two sisters, Georgia and Laura.

Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Thursday, September 9, 2010 at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan, Kansas.

Graveside Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, September 10, 2010 at the Greenwood Cemetery with Pastor John R. Warring  of the First Christian Church of Sedan officiating.

Ella Marie Rees

Ella Marie Rees, age 80, of Sedan, Kansas passed away Thursday, August 26, 2010 at the Pleasant Valley Manor Nursing Home.

She was born February 13, 1930 in Wichita, Kansas to George and Margaret E. (Miller) Blaylock.  She attended and graduated from high school in Wichita, Kansas.  She got her nursing degree to be a Registered Nurse from the St. Francis School of Nursing in Wichita, Kansas.  She married Melvin L.”Doc” Rees on September 4, 1952 in Ft. Smith, Arkansas.  In 1960 they moved to Sedan, Kansas.  He preceded her in death on April 4, 1992.

She was a member of the Epiphany Episcopal Church of Sedan, Kansas and the VFW Auxiliary #6373.  She enjoyed taking continuing education nursing classes, reading and bowling.

She is survived by one daughter, Deborah Lamb and husband Keith of Ravenna, Kentucky; one son, Michael Rees of Ft. Wayne, Indiana and Elizabeth Rees of Sedan, KS; her good friend Angy Rowe of Sedan, Kansas; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Melvin “Doc” Rees.

Mona Marthella Keeny

Sedan –

Mona Marthella Keeny, age 77, of Annapolis, Maryland, formerly of Sedan, Kansas, passed away Friday, July 23, 2010 at the Mandarin House in Annapolis, Maryland.

Mona was born and raised on a farm near Lowe, Kansas on January 1, 1933 to Arnold and Gladys (Phillips) Call. She had three sisters and three brothers. She attended grade school at the Prairie View Schoolhouse and graduated from Sedan High School. She worked at the First National Bank of Sedan after graduation.

Mona married her high school sweetheart, James Samuel Keeny on September 6, 1953 in Sedan, Kansas when she was twenty years old. She enjoyed being an Air Force wife, and made many friends along the way. She was a wonderful homemaker to her husband and four children. She loved to sew outfits for her kids, cook, bake and read. She turned every house her family lived in into a home. At one time or another she called Kansas, Arizona, Texas, Delaware, Japan, Hawaii and Maryland home. But she loved Kansas most of all.

She will forever be missed by her loving family.

Mona is survived by her husband of 57 years, James Samuel Keeny; one son, James David Keeny and wife Jessica of Riva, Maryland; three daughters, Julia Keeny of Fairfax, Virginia, Kathi Spork and husband Rick of Sebastopol, California and Diana Posten and husband David of Annapolis, Maryland and four grandchildren, Dillon and Courtney Posten of Annapolis, Maryland and Sam and James Keeny of Riva, Maryland; one brother, Nile Call and wife Barbara of Eureka, Kansas; three sisters, Virginia Jett of Phoenix, Arizona, Zelpha Wilson of Salina, Kansas, LaVerne Schilling of Haysville, Kansas and sister-in-law Ruth Call of Bartlesville, Oklahoma.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

John S. McGregor, age 91, of Sedan, Kansas, passed away Monday morning, June 14, 2010 at the Sedan City Hospital in Sedan, Kansas.

He was born May 26, 1919 in Rural Chautauqua County, Kansas to Ralph and Minnie (McAlister) McGregor.

He attended and graduated from Moline High School.  He married Weltha Mae McGregor on September 7, 1991 in Wichita, Kansas.  After their marriage, they made their home in Sedan, Kansas.  He worked as an engineer for Dow chemical company in Texas for over fifty years before retiring.

He was a member of United Methodist Church in Texas and the Masonic Lodge in Winfield.  He loved woodworking, gardening flowers, children and walking around Sedan.  He collected John Deere memorabilia.

He is survived by his wife, Weltha Mae McGregor, one daughter, Sue Fesler of Houston, Texas; one step-daughter, Sandra Keller and husband Doug of Independence, Missouri; one sister, Eva Malone of Moline, Kansas; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Darlene Schnapp, two sisters and one great-grandchild.

Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Thursday, June 17, 2010 at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan, Kansas.

Coffeyville –

George Franklin Lawson, 67, a lifelong Independence resident, passed away Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at Mercy Hospital in Independence.

George was born July 20, 1942 at Independence to Frank Owen and Dovie Mae (Hines) Lawson.  He grew up and attended school at Independence graduating from Independence High School.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the military police.  After receiving his honorable discharge he returned to Independence to make his home.

On June 11, 1976, he married Louise (Ellinwood) Nelson at Miami, OK.  Following their marriage they made their home in Independence where George was a Supervisor at Emerson Electric for many years.

George was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, the Elk City Masonic Lodge, Mirza Temple in Pittsburg, and American Legion Post #0138 in Caney.

Survivors include his wife, Louise of Independence; one daughter, Theresa Lawson of Tulsa, OK; two step-daughters, Susan Fienen and husband Doug of Independence, and Kay Teague and husband Danny of Bartlesville, OK; one sister, Betty Busby and husband Steve of Independence; one grandson, four step-grandsons, one step-granddaughter, one step-great-granddaughter, three nephews and one niece.

Cremation has taken place and private family inurnment will take place at a later date in the Ellinwood Family lot in Greenwood Cemetery at Sedan, KS.

Sedan –

Richard LeRoy Buzzell, age 64, of Sedan, Kansas passed away Sunday, May 9, 2010 at the Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan.

He was born April 18, 1946 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Harvey E. Sr. and Elisabeth D. (Miller) Buzzell.  He grew up and attended school in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma graduating from Harding High School.  He attended Fort Scott Community College Truck Driving School and later Kansas Law Enforcement Academy in Hutchison, Kansas.

On March 26, 1967 he married Wanda Dunagan in Guthrie, Oklahoma.  They lived in Guthrie, Oklahoma from 1966 to 1979.  Then they moved to Hoyt, Kansas until 1990 until coming to Sedan where they have lived for the past 20 years.

Richard worked at Cessna Aircraft Company in Independence, Kansas for twelve years before retiring in 2009.

He was a past member of the Soldier Creek Baptist Church; he was baptized in 1959 at the First Baptist Church in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.  He was also a deacon and member of the First Baptist Church of Sedan.

He is survived by his wife, Wanda of the home in Sedan; one son, Richard L. Buzzell Jr. of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; one daughter, April Hunt of Meriden, Kansas; three brothers, Harvey E. Buzzell Jr. of Casco, Maine, Ronald E. Buzzell of Guthrie, Oklahoma, and John Allen Buzzell of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; one sister, Teresa Ann Pruitt-Holman of Moore, Oklahoma; three grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Donald R. Buzzel.

Church services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 13, 2010 at the First Baptist Church in Sedan with Dr. J. Dean McNamara officiating.  Burial will follow at the Greenwood Cemetery in Sedan.

Visitation will be Wednesday, May 12, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. and the family will be greeting friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan.

Donna A. Fildes, age 79, of Sedan, Kansas passed away Sunday, March 7, 2010 at the St. John Medical Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

She was born December 2, 1930 in Elk City, Kansas to Lawrence and Mary (Wiltfong) Smith. She lived in the Elk City area most of her childhood and attended school in Elk City.

On March 13, 1963 she married Bob Fildes in Miami, Oklahoma. They made their home in Arkansas City, Kansas until moving to Sedan in 1979.

She worked as a sales clerk at Duckwall’s Retail Store in Sedan for the past five years until she was diagnosed with cancer.

She loved crocheting, doing bead work, QVC, and she also loved her flowers.

She is survived by her husband Bob Fildes of the home in Sedan, Kansas; three daughters, Donna and husband Johnie Kitterman of Winfield, Kansas, Patricia and husband Ed Oyler of Independence, Kansas, and Teresa and husband Tracy Williams of Sedan, Kansas; three sons, Ron and wife Kay Lair of Augusta, Kansas, Michael Lair of Chanute, Kansas, and Richard and wife Jo Ann Lair of Independence, Kansas; one sister, Linda and husband Charlie Haskin of Prewitt, NM; twelve grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one granddaughter.
