Sedan –

Betty J. Nelson, age 87, of Sedan, Kansas passed away Wednesday, November 17, 2010 at the Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan, Kansas.

She was born January 1, 1923 in Tonkawa, Oklahoma to Merle A. and Marvel L. (Mount) Talbott.  She attended Eagle Community School thru the eighth grade and then graduating from Yale High School in Yale, Oklahoma.  She was married to Merle Nelson for many years until he preceded her in death.

She worked as a clerk in department stores for many years until her retirement.

She moved to Sedan from Perry, Oklahoma on August 23, 1996.  She has been a resident of Pleasant Valley Manor for the past year.

She was a member of the Disciples of Christ Christian Church in Perry, Oklahoma.

She is survived by one daughter; Andrea and husband Ed John of Colorado, one son; Carl Shumaker, three sisters; Nancy Ross of Dunham Springs, Louisiana, Carolyn Edwards of Ponca City, Oklahoma, and Donna Thrasher of Houston, Texas, three brothers; Charles Talbott of Pilot, North Carolina, John Talbott of Stillwater, Oklahoma, and David Talbott of Odessa, Texas, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son, two brothers, and one sister.

Family and friends may call from 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Friday, November 19, 2010 at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home of Sedan, Kansas.

A Memorial Service will be held Friday, November 19, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at the Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan with visitation following at the funeral home from 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Friday, November 19, 2010 at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home of Sedan, Kansas.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, November 20, 2010 at the Lawson Cemetery in Yale, Oklahoma with Chaplain Mike Graham of the Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice officiating.

The family has suggested memorial contributions to the Pleasant Valley Manor Nursing Home or the Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice and these remembrances may be left in care of David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 209 N. Douglas, Sedan, Kansas 67361.
